'Death Of The Rave'

"Everyone's talking about the death of the rave
scene and warehouse parties and the like, but the point people seem to be
missing is that warehouse parties never really existed in Australia in the first
place. The rave scene, ripped from overseas, was never really a true rave scene
in the original meaning of the term" - DJ Angus, 1994

If you haven't heard of Showtek yet, or if you haven't listened to them, click on the left hand side of the page where there is a list of artists, as I've put a link to their myspace which you should definitely listen to. Once you've had a listen, I'm sure you'll be keen to go to one of their shows - headlining XCLUSIVE last year with Zany, Donkey Rollers and many other mindblowing acts, Showtek is a not-to-miss show. As you can see above, Showtek are only playing shows in Brizzy on the 25th of July at the HI FI club and in Melbourne on the 27th of July at Inflation. They seem to be missing Sydney which is strange, and I hope that they do play a Sydney show. I'll be shattered if they don't.

Anywho, if you're keen to hit up Melbz for some awesome events, the weekly events are amazing at Inflation / PHD (I haven't actually made it down there yet, but from what my mates have told me, it's time for an epic road trip soon). Check out the PHD site for merchandise, info on their weekly events and to simply witness its awesomeness.

Upcoming Events

For those of you who have the funds to go to the Final Transmission on the 30th of May, I hope you feel pretty darned special, as I can't afford it at the moment but I wish I was going. Seeing Headhunterz live would be such an experience even for those who have never heard it before. Have fun everyone :)
For Canberrans who aren't keen to travel up to Sydney for Transmission or Prophecy in July, then don't fret, there are still plenty of decent local events coming up.
This Friday the 22nd of May there is the Transmission Warmup at Krave Bar, 10pm - 5 am - unfortunately its 18+ so afew of us miss out.
On Friday the 29th of May there is Nik Fish's show, with Nomad and Enerv8 as support acts at Academy from 10pm - 5am. I recently bought Nik Fish's compilation CD, and I HIGHLY recommend it. It has amazing remixes of Showtek's Aus show last year, Technoboy, Blutonium Boy, Headhunterz, and many more. If you're not 18 and can't go to this show then I definitely suggest you get this CD as it will blow your mind.

[If you're coming to my eighteenth for predrinks at tongue and groove the same night we're all heading to this after, going to be a good night!]

There is also another event Energize that's on in a couple of weeks time in Canberra as well, I'll check my facebook later for details and update here, but I know it's 18+.

Then during the next school holidays (July I think? Sorry, I'll update this later with better details) Neverest has come around again at the good ole Mitchell Rock Climbing Centre. Neverest last year was definitely a success, with a killer light show, and some really good acts. Neverest has always seemed to attract a bigger crowd than most Canberra raves so this next one has a lot of expectations put on it and hopefully it can fulfill them. There are plenty of videos on youtube and facebook of Neverest last year, I'll put some links up here soon where you can check out the pretty lasers :)

Ooooo and guess what. We're looking at another Utopia in Sydney in either September or November. This is definitely not something to miss, although I don't think much could beat those heart-warming flamethrowers and the ever so pretty ferris wheel.

Also in September, on the 19th Defqon 1 is going to rock the sydney crowd. Another 18+ event, unfortunately it's on the day that I fly to America, so all of you better go and dance that little bit extra harder for me.

For more updates, if you are a facebook user then join the group "I'M A RAVER". They have updates almost weekly of all of the events all around Australia, including weekly events [with v.i.p passes] and bigger events, from PHD to tiny raves all over the country.

Check here for more details, updates, shows and events soon.

Ever So Pretty

Kandi Kids

A candy raver (most commonly called a "Kandi Kid" or "Candee Child", "Kandi Raver") is a rave attendee who exchanges or shares small gifts, primarily beads, necklaces, toys, bracelets, or stickers.
The defining part of a Kandi Kids appearance is their wearing many of homemade bracelets made of plastic beads, known as Kandi. The bracelets are often given as gifts to remember past raves and commemorate new friendships. Kandi Kids are also known (and sometimes identified) by their brightly coloured style, which is very similar to the Harajuku style in Japan. They are often found wearing bright clothing depicting "trippy" designs, as well as cartoon characters, hair extensions or hair falls, fake dreadlocks, childish attire, chew toys laced on string around their necks, fuzzy leg warmers, visor hats, hair clips, and much bright makeup.
Kandi Kids often find one or more things to wear that make them appear different from other Kandi Kids and people in general. This individuality allows for easy recognition. It often is a particular style or color of hair, a particular hat, shirt, pair of pants, gloves, headphones, belt, or other accessory.

Candy ravers can primarily trace their style of fashion to the late 1980s culture and the "Summer of Love" in the United Kingdom. Fashion in clubs at the time were primarily day-glo colored attire, smiley face clothing (fashion also attributed to Acid House and the corresponding movement), and whistles.

"Everyone felt free to be themselves do what they want be free with no fear of being looked down on. People came in costumes people gave out candy people introduced themselves to random others!!" - Vladimir Katz, 1994.

Kandy (or "Kandi") is generally made of plastic pony beads occasionally with various other beads made of metal, wood, or glass. Hearts, stars, pom-poms, Alphabeads, glow-in-the-dark beads, butterflys, and smiley faces are popular choices when making Kandi and are generally made with elastic string to stretch. Candy ravers will sometimes hold parties just for the sake of making Kandi, generally as gifts for friends.

Visual Aspect

The first is the visual aspect that kandi creates. They are usually very bright day-glo colors chosen especially for the purpose of the visual effects created when someone dances wearing them while being illuminated by different types and colors of light. The sequence of colors chosen will sometimes appear jumbled and somewhat random but the beads are typically chosen to contrast with other beads making them visually jump out. Some beads will also be UV reactive and/or glow in the dark. Because of the vast amounts of Kandi that are worn, typically not all pieces will fit onto the raver's arm. Sometimes a shoelace or string is used to hold all the Kandi. This shoelace or string will generally be tied to a raver's waist, or backpack.

OTHER FUNCTIONS OF CANDY COMING SOON !

What You Don't Hear On The News

Myths About Raves

There are lots of fights, and not enough security.

Consider this. Small raves, such as the ones in Canberra such as Neverest, Hard To The Core and etc which can consist of around 100 or 200 people; or large raves in larger cities, such as Utopia Homegrown 2 or the Final Transmission which can consist of 6000 + people, or even raves such as Sensation White that featured in Melbourne to bring in the New Year for 2009 which had a whopping 40,000 people. There are no more fights in these places than what there would be in any venue with that amount of people, crammed into a small space, especially with the addition of the bar's that are usually included at these venues. Shove any amount of people into a space with alcohol and there are bound to be conflicts. Whilst entering into these venues, one is encountered by countless sniffer dogs, has to walk past many paddy wagons and police (both in uniform, and undercover) and may be frisked, or have their bags checked, many times before entering into these events. These security guards and police do a damn good job to make sure everyone has a safe but fun time, not to mention the First Aid team. It is extremely untrue to say that there is a lack of security at these events, or that there is excess violence.

Everyone is "munted" (on drugs).

This is also extremely untrue. Some ravers have been going for more than 10 or 20 years to these events, and swear that they will continue to do so until they are physically unable. For example, I saw the same guy at both Godspeed in Utopia, he would have been roughly in his fifties and he was in a wheelchair, right in the middle of the dancefloor on both occasions. Myself and some friends, and this man, were the last ones left outside as the sun rose after Utopia. I remember just seeing him sitting there staring at the Arena as they were closing up. In a way, it was quite touching, as he was staring in such a nostalgic yet loving way. It made me wonder where he had come from, and how long he had been doing it for. I'm sure there are thousands of stories all over the world, that may be similar to his. Thousands of those stories may not include any powders, liquids or chemicals that some use to enhance this experience.

Now, it is pretty easy to tell when someone is under the influence of drugs, ecstasy or methamphetamines in particular. Grinding of the jaw, swollen lips, restlessness, enlarged and shiny pupils, and they are unusually friendly and/or attracted to everything/everyone. If I had to pick one quote from all of the raves I have been to, it would go something along the lines of "oh my god.. you're so pretty, like you're so gorgeous.. and you're so like amazing ! do you have any gum?"

However, there are still alot of people that are not like this at raves. (Yet, they can still be as friendly and lovey).

I am sure, without a doubt, that there are certain people which only go to these events to take ecstasy and other stimulants - however, the vast majority will usually claim that if you go to such events always on drugs then you cannot experience the atmosphere and the music for what it truely is. Another quote that I have heard many times is something like "If you can't enjoy this for what it is, without drugs - then why are you here?"
